Hi Pat,
I, myself, have always liked the jointed dolls. I don't have my A&V dolls yet so I can't comment on them but I do have a CED Colin (love her BTW), the jointing is reminiscent of the vintage Dollikins. The new Alex doll will apparently have lots of joints too, even the ankles and toes I believe. I'm not that fond of Alex but the joints sound very appealing. I would love to see a modern Barbie sized doll with joints like the CED dolls. I even prefer the Barbie dolls with the jointed knees rather than the bend knees but I don't like the hands that they use on many of them so I prefer the jointed knees on the newer style body (w/o twist waist) or I use the other body and replace the lower part of the arms with the ballerina hands.
Yes, Colin is lovely. I know her white lips have created a stir, but I am intrigued by the choices the artists make for their dolls. I looked at a group photo of the CED dolls today and can't see why a collector would go to the trouble of buying an expensive CED doll to redress or repaint it (of which there are those collectors who do and they're proud of it--more power to 'em--they bought the dolls, it's their right to do with them whatever!).
Could be the jointing is the greatest appeal of these dolls. I am so glad you like jointing, too!
But for my money, the artistry of the dolls is still worth preserving. That being said, like you, the jointing on the new Alex is quite exciting, but the face of that doll has always left me bored. I talked to Laura about how uninspired I found the facial features of the Alex dolls are and she told me a little doll history about these Alexes.
Seems that the artists that were hired to do the Alex sculpts are Russian. If you look at the face, do you notice a kind of babushka-looking quality to the paint and the sculpt? Have you ever taken notice of Russian nesting dolls? You might see there is a kind of "flat," 2-dimensiona quality to Russian nesting dolls. When Laura explained the artists for the facial screening and sculpt for Alex were Russian, the stylization for the doll didn't seem so uninspired afterall. Laura also told me that these 2 doll artists are very sought after for their screenings. Doug and Laura used these artists for the development of the CED dolls. But the final paints were determined by Doug and Laura.
So, I guess this isn't the CED list and I should stop talking about them on the CAndiChat, but I'd rather talk here about other dolls because this list knows so much about a lot of dolls. I loved hearing about these CED dolls, where are some sites we can go to see them? I thought long ago, when there was a great lull between new Candi dolls, that we decided it was OK to talk about fashion dolls in general, as we were afraid there might never be another Candi. & we wanted to stay connected to one another Pat Hawkins.
I think that is right, Pat. We talk about most fashion dolls; we are a group of doll collectors who love Candi, but collect other dolls, too. And we're here to chat & share our knowledge. I for one love the CED Colin doll though I will never own one due to cost. I had a great time chatting with Doug James at the Doll & Teddy Bear Expo in DC last year at their CED table. Lovely dolls! I also saw Laura; so sad... Melissa

I was at the Expo last year, too. Of all the other dolls I saw at the show, I was most interested in Alice Leverette's exquisite dolls. I've talked to her before and am always impressed with her. Talk about jointed dolls! They're awesome! Well, it seemed to me that as old as this list is and that there are so many of us that have been with the list for so long and we kind of know each other, that's why I took the liberty to ask about what you all think about joints on fashion dolls.
I thought the Veronique and Adele dolls had moving elbows, too. I gather the knee joint is a smoother joint, similar to what is on the Tonner Tylers. It's always bugged me that the current Cissys do not use a jointed elbow, like the originals. The knee is jointed, but not the elbows. It's funny, I don't notice joints on dolls. But then I don't take vacation pictures for the plants and flowers and people--I like the industrial sites and take pictures of them.
