I am far from a GPC expert, but mainly a user of several old but good working pascal programs. I just installed gpc-20041017 from www.g-n-u.de/gpc on my Linux PC. I downloaded gpc-20041017-with-gcc.i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz, unzipped and untarred in / When I ask for gpc, it seems to be there, and gpc -v gives version 20041017, based on gcc-3.3.3. When I try to compile one of my programs, giving gpc -o dbase --automake -I/usr/include/ncurses dbase.pas I now get a very long error list, starting with /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.3/units/crtc.c:45:20: stdlib.h: No such file or directory /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.3/units/crtc.c:46:20: unistd.h: No such file or directory /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.3/units/crtc.c:47:20: string.h: No such file or directory /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.3/units/crtc.c:48:19: errno.h: No s uch file or directory /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.3/units/crtc.c:49:22: sys/time.h: N o such file or directory /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.3/units/crtc.c:50:20: signal.h: No such file or directory In file included from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.3/units/crtc. c:124: /usr/include/ncurses.h:101:19: stdio.h: No such file or directory ... Is there a diff for GCC 3.4.2? Mac OS X hosted cross compiler targeting Windows (MingW)

To my surprise and joy, I managed to build a Mac OS X hosted cross compiler targeting Windows (MingW). I used the information found at (or through) <http://www.mingw.org/mingwfaq.shtml>, more specifically <http://www.libsdl.org/extras/win32/cross/README.txt>. With some necessary modifications, the <http://www.libsdl.org/extras/win32/cross/build-cross.sh> script was able to build cross binutils, as well as gcc and gpc cross compilers. The actual build was done with gpc 20041017 and gcc-3.3.3-200402017-1 (mingw special). I hope, I will find time (in a few weeks) to add binaries, sources and a build script for the cross compiler to my website. The cross compiler swallows hello.pas and the resulting binary actually does say "Hello, World" at the other side of the fence. However, the question arises how reliable the cross-compiler is, as the testsuite says "if this is a cross-compiler, you can't run the test suite easily". Is it reasonable to rely on native testsuite results on both the host and the target ? Regards, Adriaan van Os

The random generator is in both cases the Mersenne Twister (routine mt19937 from the authors' site). And I had forgot the Fortran program. Anyway you are right: the pseudorandom generator takes the most time in the program. Hi everybody, I ran some tests that make extensive use of large (up to 10000 elements) arrays, up to three dimensions both in GPC and in Fortran (Intel). Even turning on optimisations, GPC is at least five times slower than Fortran in completing the tests. Anyone can tell me why, and possibly some way to make GPC recover some of this lag? Operator overloading troubles

I have a few questions regarding operator overloading. One, How do I forward-reference an operator redefinition? GPC complains when I leave out the parameter and result declarations in the actual definition: TRoot.epb:83: error: missing operator result variable TRoot.epb:83: error: result type of operator undefined TRoot.epb:83: error: operator must have two arguments If I can't do that, why not? Not being able to do that is awkward, when you're dealing with modules. Two, Why does GPC spit out a warning when the arguments are classes (as opposed to pointers to classes)? OO question re: private fields

Why can't I have a private field in a child that has the same name as a private field in an ancestor? I don't think there's going to be much difficulty determining which private field is referenced; UIM, it'll be similar to how `virtual' methods are traced. This is what I get while trying to do this: TException.eph:86: error: cannot overwrite data field `ObjectStructure' of parent object TException.eph:85: error: duplicate field `ObjectStructure' Using build 20040516 (binary distro). function results in `with' statements

Currently GPC allows function results in `with' statements, as in: program foo; type a = record b, c: Integer end; function f: a; begin f := a[b: 2; c: 3] end; begin with f do WriteLn (b, c); end. However, GPC currently also allows assignments to the components, such as: with f do b := 2 which is quite clearly wrong. Probably for this reasone, EP forbids function results in `with' statements at all (6.9.3.10: withÂelement = variableÂaccess | constantÂaccess.). I don't know about other dialects (BP has no records as result types, so the issue doesn't arise. What about Delphi etc.?). At the moment, I'd tend to follow EP here and forbid them at all. Or does anyone think it's really necessary to have them? (Which would probably imply more work to make the fields read-only.)
