How about straightforward English: The capitalization of the definition <original> does not match <current>. or more tightly: Capitalization of definition <original> does not match <current>. hi minwidth for strings in writeln is broken: program hello; begin writeln('hello':30, ' ':30, 'world'); end. The output should be 25 spaces in front of hello and 30 spaces between hello and world. Russ

Accessing command line data

There is no provision in any of the standard Pascals for accessing command line data. The Borland clones provide an analog of the C/Unix world in Paramstr and Paramct. In PascalP I handled this with a system file, called cmdline, much like input and output. It was defined at the encompassing level 0 as a read-only text file, and held a single line. To access it one could use: reset(cmdline); cmdline^ get(cmdline); eoln(cmdline) eof(cmdline) read(cmdline, ch); read(cmdline, intvalue); (* etc *) i.e. absolutely no extensions to the standard system. Note that it could be reset multiple times, to restart reading from the beginning. Since it is a one line file after readln(cmdline) eof(cmdline) will be true. If cmdline is empty eof(cmdline) will be true immediately after reset(cmdline). Naturally the contents of that line depend on whatever shell launched the program. How are the chances of adding this to gpc. The line itself must already be there for the runtime to prepare paramstr and paramct. An advantage of this is that other systems can be source compatible. All the users need do is prepare a one line file, call it cmdline, and run the Pascal program. At the same time gpc users can still access an exterior file call cmdline, by simply defining it themselves. gpc and gcc-3.3

I'm currently experiencing problems with gpc builds based on gcc-3.2.[23] on non ix86-linux architectures. These bugs are fixed in the current gcc-3.3 release branch. Did "somebody" already began updating gpc to work with gcc-3.3? Thanks, Matthias PS: Would you mind sending automatic testsuite results to this list for the various Debian architectures (linux, hurd and freebsd)?

Calling libraries from MingW GPC

Dear Chief, I have one "strange" question: I have some libraries written for Qbasic under DOS: they are used to communicate, via RS232C, with a device which can read analogic and digital inputs and control relais and stepping motors. My question is: do you think it could be possible to link these libraries and write a wrapper unit to control the interface from within GPC in MingW/DJPP? If necessary, I can send you the binaries (the software isn't any longer sold nor supported ). Thank you, best regards Silvio a Beccara

My example was trivial, but in practice I'm trying to zero very large arrays of large records which I very time consuming with loops and type-matched assignments. So I do new(anyvar,x, y); zero(anyvar^,#0,sizeof(anyvar)); initialize(anyvar); .. and because initialize is a built-in, it doesn't need any declaring. BUT ... when I run with electric-fence I get a SIGSEGV in memset. Doing some experimentation, it appears that each dynamic array dimension uses an extra 4 words. So if I amend my zero function call as follows ... zero(anyvar^,#0,sizeof(anyvar)-8); ... the problem goes away. In this case, the Initialize() call doesn't seem to make any difference. Am I right in assuming that the dynamic array sizing is tacked on the end of the storage so deducting 4 words per dimension is the right approach? Is Initialize() only required after I've zeroed a string or a record containing a string? Finally, given that Initialize can very usefully take any variable as a parameter, it's a shame that it doesn't actually do the zeroing. Is there another built-in I haven't spotted that will do this without be having to explicitly worry about the number of dimensions the dynamic arrays have? David Wood, QinetiQ Farnborough.
