It's not accessing it using a base address, but it's the closest thing :) I'm not partial to any particular segment register so gs is good enough for me so long as I don't have to reload it every time :) If anybody knows how to access the VGA segment using only a base address I'd still appreciate the tip. Don't they use memory mapping so that each process has its own address space? In this case it might help to call some memory mapping function, and then you get the linear base address you want. There is no chance to access the VGA memory without - explicitly or implicitly - loading a segment (selector) register. The best thing you can do - if possible; I didn't check - is to let GPC move the value $A000 to the segment register rather than doing that yourself with an explicit `movw %ax, %gs' (or whatever) asm statement. Consult the "gpcasm" manual (URL above) for how to do such things. (* Please note that that segment register will *not* get "clobbered" by the asm statement. What I mean is something equivalent to `/etc/profile.local' which is - in contrast to `/etc/profile' - not touched by YaST. But the correct place to ask is S.u.S.E. <support(a)suse.de> who does the support for YaST and their Linux distribution. Where do I enter the settings to make them permanent? LILO tells me that it is mode 0b, but entering vga=0b, vga=9x0b, vga=12 as replacement for vga=all does not change the mode. Problem #2: ~~~~~~~~~~~ I encountered that YaST is changing back all modifications of X. I entered automatic startup of xearth, etc., but if I add some X applications, YAST recreates the configuration file. Is there a special filename which is executed during startup of X which contains my personal and/or system wide settings for X? Please, leave me*some instructions what I must do.
