I think going to p2c will isolate your fine work.

Thanks! However it is always good to have several different compilers around. By looking at p2c, I could see the problem in GPC and (presumably) vice versa. GPC is robust and has an active community. p2c works for standard Pascal (all I really need) but it is not active.
