Probably not intentional. Just do it.
When I was about to do it, I saw that there are (undocumented) `cleanall' rules which do it. So it seems to be intentional that plain `clean' doesn't ...
Ah!, yes, clean removes only .o and .lo files, cleanall removes also the libraries and binaries.
