Hi again, This one might go a bit out of the boundarys of this list but here I go. After running ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --enable-shared --with-gnu-as --with-gnu-ld --enable-threads=posix --disable-checking --enable-languages=c,c++,ada,f77,objc,java,pascal --with-system-zlib --enable-__cxa_atexit (gcc 3.3.2 and gpc-20030830.tar.gz) and then make bootstrap I get after some time something like this: gcc -c -g -gnatpg -gnata -I- -I. -Iada -I/home/chaser/gcc/gcc-3.3.2/gcc/ada /home/chaser/gcc/gcc-3.3.2/gcc/ada/treepr.adb -o ada/treepr.o treeprs.ads:1:01: compilation unit expected make[2]: *** [ada/treepr.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/chaser/gcc/gcc-build/gcc' make[1]: *** [stage1_build] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/chaser/gcc/gcc-build/gcc' make: *** [bootstrap] Error 2 [root@serenity gcc-build]# I have the gnat which cam with the redhat installation. On http://gcc.gnu.org/install/build.html there was were some words about Building the Ada compiler and I think I did the things mentioned here. Am I missing something here or does the problem go somewhat deeper? My machine is Linux serenity 2.4.20-8 #1 Thu Mar 13 16:42:56 EST 2003 i586 i586 i386 GNU/Linux (300mhz AMD K6-2) and currently my gcc is 3.2.2 Thank You in advance, Oliver

Gnu Pascal running on 64-bit Linux or Windows?

Hello, Evidently, although Borland has ported Delphi to .Net, they have no plans to create a 64-bit native compiler. In fact, they have licensed the .Net compiler from MS. They seem to be getting out of the native compiler biz altogether. So, I bet you can guess my next question (Ok, well it was in the msg title). Does Gnu Pascal run on 64-bit Linux (SuSe or Redhat, etc.) or 64-bit Windows on either the Itanium 64 or AMD 64 chips? Thanks! -dennis

gcc patching

Hi, Its my first time to write to this list, but I hope I can describe my problem clearly. I am currently supposed to program "things" (university stuff) in pascal and the teachers recommended GNU-pascal. So I tried to install it on my linux machine (specs later) - no luck. Then I decided to build the gcc from scratch (first I used the compiling tutorial on the gnu-pascal.de) and when I reached a point in ./configure where I got an error: *** *** Detected GCC version 3.3.2. *** GPC 2.1 requires one of the following versions of the GCC sources to build: *** *** 2.8.1 *** 2.95.1 *** 2.95.2 *** 2.95.3-5 *** 2.95.3-6 *** 2.95.3-8 *** 2.95.3 *** 2.95.4 *** 2.95 *** 3.2.1 *** 3.2.2 *** 3.2.3 *** 3.3.1 *** 3.3 *** *** (You can try to patch GCC manually by typing a command like *** `patch -p1 < p/diffs/gcc-<version>.diff' and patching possible *** rejects by hand before you run configure again.) *** So I downloaded the .diff files from gcc ftp -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7916747 Oct 22 22:14 gcc-3.2.2-3.2.3.diff -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 84108856 Oct 22 22:10 gcc-3.2.3-3.3.diff -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1222880 Oct 22 22:01 gcc-3.3.1-3.3.2.diff -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 16818189 Oct 22 22:04 gcc-3.3-3.3.1.diff so here are four of them. And no the things that started to puzzle me: Currently my gcc is 3.2.2 and the gcc I am trying to compile is 3.3.2. The last supported gcc (by ./configure) is 3.3 so do I need to start applying the patches from the 3.2.2-3.2.3 and so on (all those 4 patches in logical order) or is it done somehow differently? --executable-file-name

Hi Frank At present, "gpc foo.pas" produces "a.exe" on Windows, and perhaps just "a" or "a.out" on other platforms. If you want "foo.exe" or "foo" or whatever, you have to use "--executable-file-name" or use "-o foo[.extension]". Would it be sensible to have situations where "--executable-file-name" is supplied automatically? I am not wishing to create more work - but I have always wondered whether anyone ever actually wants "gpc foo.pas" to produce "a.[whatever]". This seems to be a relic from the past (and perhaps from gcc), and I wonder whether "--executable-file-name" should not actually be the standard behaviour (with people still being free to use "-o foo" if they want). I am not sure what you think about this, or how trivial or otherwise it would be to do this, even if it were thought desirable (and there might be reasons why it would not be good to go down this route). Finally, under BP and Delphi, "gpc foo.pas" will always produce "foo[.whatever]". Perhaps "--executable-file-name" should always be implied when in BP or Delphi mode? Of course it is a trivial thing to supply this at the command line, so if it would be too much trouble, then please junk the idea. Range Checking and Speed

Dear GPC Users, The GPC manual says I can turn off range checking with {$R-} or with the command-line option --no-range-checking. I tried both, but the compiler gives me an error: unrecognised directive. I'm using GPC for MacOSX compiled with GCC 3.3. Can I turn off range checking? I translated a few thousand lines of Code Warrior Pascal into GPC Pascal. As I did so, I took the opportunity to make use of GPC's wonderful dynamic schemata types, so I removed all my ugly pointer arithmatic, which I had previously used to access dynamically allocated blocks of memory. My translated code runs at half the speed of my original code. I don't think it is the dynamic schemata, but I thought I would turn off the range checking just to see. What other default compiler options might slow down the code? Should I turn off debugging information? Yours, Kevan Hashemi

Status of GPC?

Hallo, what is the status of GPC? Is it possible to build it with GCC 3.3.1? i would like to provide a precompiled version of GPC for Cygwin with the latest GCC. Are there still some patches which I need to apply (i.e. regarding the use on Cygwin)? Gerrit -- =^..^=
